Charcoal decking transforms Edinburgh garden

A homeowner based in the heart of Scotland, David Lockhart wanted a new and refreshing alternative to traditional timber decking when renovating his garden this year.
David had already created a space with timber sleepers and fencing, so it was important for him to find something that was a natural fit but with a touch of class.
David said: “I was looking for a new decking product with a contemporary twist. When I set my eyes on charcoal IRO decking, I instantly knew it was the product I would be using.
“There are so many benefits to using IRO decking, but it was the product’s low-maintenance properties – the fact that it repels water – that really drew my attention.
“IRO comes in variety of colours but I chose charcoal black because it provides a modern edge to my outdoor space, and I’ve never seen a black timber decking product before!”
Carol Burns, sales area manager at IRO Timber, supported David throughout the project. She said: “I knew IRO was the perfect match. It’s still a fairly new product and this excites customers.”

IRO decking goes through a seven-step process which involves two stages of kiln drying in addition to heat enhancement, brushing, high pressure treatment and being coated in a wood cream. This adds more protection to the overall product and helps to prevent fungal and insect attack.
“IRO isn’t a typical decking product. It’s a solution that won’t age like traditional decking due to the manufacturing process and the wood cream that’s applied”, said Carol.
David added: “I designed and installed the decking myself. This meant I had to cut the boards down to the correct size for my project and coat any exposed ends with the touch up cream. I found the process incredibly easy.”
